The value to be aimed for in reef aquariums is a salinity of 35 ppt. This means that 35 grams of salt are dissolved in one litre of water. The lower the salt content of the water, the lower the concentration of all macro-elements dissolved in it.
In order to operate a reef aquarium successfully, the salinity value should be kept as constant as possible within the range of 35ppt.
The lower the salinity of the water, the lower the concentration of all macro-elements dissolved in it. The macro-elements that are directly related to salinity are: hydrogen carbonate, calcium, magnesium, strontium and potassium.
